Curriculum Overhaul and Alignment for Grades 6–10 Social Studies (Vertical & Horizontal Integration Initiative)

Role: Lead Curriculum Designer (Project Lead, Cross-Departmental Initiative)

Timeline: 22-23 through 23-24 school year

 

Project Overview:

  • Led a school-wide curriculum redesign project to align and scaffold Social Studies education from Grades 6–10 in preparation for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in Grade 11. T

  • he initiative aimed to ensure skill continuity, vertical and horizontal alignment, and compliance with both C3 standards and Bahrain Ministry of Education requirements.

 

Key Objectives:

  • Ensure vertical alignment from Grades 6–10 and bridge from Grade 5

  • Scaffold academic and inquiry skills for potential entry into IBDP

  • Align standards across C3 Framework and Bahrain MOE content

  • Integrate literacy, writing, research, and citation scaffolding with the ELA department

  • Standardize academic terminology and assessment expectations

  • Monitor implementation fidelity and instructional quality

  • Curate and approve content/resources for all 6–12 grade levels

Responsibilities & Key Actions:

  • Curriculum Mapping: Aligned academic content both vertically (across grades) and horizontally (across subjects and departments).

  • Skills Scaffolding: Built a progression of academic, research, and writing skills from Grades 6–10 to support future IBDP readiness.

  • Cross-Department Collaboration: Partnered with the English department to align writing rubrics, research expectations, and citation protocols by grade level.

  • Resource Curation: Researched and secured Ministry-approved resources for each unit across Grades 6–12.

  • Content Creation: Developed complete unit plans, assessments, and standardized templates to ensure consistency and remove ambiguity.

  • Terminology & Tools: Introduced common frameworks (e.g., PEAL paragraphs, writing templates) across teams.

  • Teacher Support & Observation: Conducted classroom visits and check-ins with 7 dual-subject teachers to ensure continuity and best practices.

  • Assessment Standardization: Evaluated and aligned quizzes, tests, and final exams to match curriculum goals and skills.

  • Received full approval from the Head of School, Secondary Principal, and IBDP Coordinator

  • Successfully implemented across 6 grade levels and 7 teachers

  • Created sustainable documentation via Google Docs, Sheets, and Chat for real-time collaboration and accountability

  • Significantly improved clarity, alignment, and teacher confidence in curriculum delivery

  • Established a foundation for smooth entry into IBDP or alternative academic pathways
